ORLEY WELLNESS PROGRAMME

Health is defined differently among experts, but all definitions have a common theme: self responsibility and adopting a healthy lifestyle.

Wellness, on the other hand, is an active, lifelong process of becoming aware of choices and making decisions that lend themselves toward a more balanced and fulfilling life. Wellness involves choices about our lives and our priorities that determine our lifestyles.

At Orley Foods,  our staffs’ health and wellness is very important to us. To this end, we are fortunate to have a clinic on site with a full time occupational nursing sister, an occupational part time doctor and a part time counsellor.

We also run programs to help individuals cope with specific issues related to health and well-being; management of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and asthma, health promotion including weight loss groups, ending smoking programs, womens’ health talks, seminars on drug and alcohol abuse and TB prevention

Fundamental health screening, for example, vision screening, hearing tests, lung function tests and pap smears are also offered to our staff.

By providing such a comprehensive health service to employees, we boost productivity, reduce absenteeism and cut healthcare and worker compensation costs.

This year we launched our “ Know your HIV status campaign” in support of our HIV and AIDS Policy. At this point we have 5 trained HIV peer educators who assist and run the program with the help of their project leader, Sr J Polson.

Herewith snippets from the Press release in August 2011:-

Orley Foods achieves quality and safety pinnacle
‘The quest for quality and safety is on ongoing and challenging journey for all food manufacturers – but if ever there’s a brief pause of achievement in this quest, it’s winning ISO 22000 certification. That said, one of the most important aspects of ISO 22000 is that new goals are set and continual improvement is achieved,’ says CEO Craig Henry. Orley Foods worker puts new meaning into the long
commute, er, runs to work

‘Last July, a taxi strike in Du-Noon found Lwando stuck without any means of getting to work except on his own two feet. Undeterred, he walked the 8kms to Orley Foods, and back again at the end of the day – and found it a physical breeze. A keen distance athlete when at school in the Eastern Cape, 27-year old Lwando’s long walk inspired him to start running to and from work every day, and the more he did, it, the more he loved it. Not only did it save him plenty in taxi fares, but he started enjoying all the benefits that go with regular exercise: he lost 12kg, quit smoking and found new energy, zest for life and peace of mind’. Wathint’abafazi , wathint’ibhokodo!! (You strike a woman, you strike a Rock)

The 9th of August every year women all over South Africa celebrate the courage, strength and persistence of those courageous 20 000 women who marched to the Union buildings in Pretoria, to deliver a petition imposing Pass laws 53 years ago! Those women have a laid a foundation that is now enjoyed by generations.
Our Orley women honoured this day in Royal Style. Not even the rain deterred them. We asked the ladies to come dressed in their finest and we had all sorts of outfits from Victorian, Traditional and Vintage to Eastern styles.
Each woman was given her own tiara on arrival and was entertained by Tanya from ‘The Lightness Of Being’.  Not only did she feed everyones’ soul with her inspirational and motivational message, she topped the day with some Latin dancing lessons and spot prize giving. Vania Vilander, one of our Microbiologists, proved to be the Orley ‘Dancing Queen’.  To end the morning off, each woman received a rose as well as a goodie bag handed out by senior management.  What a blast it was!

Work Integrated Learning

This was the mission by Orley Foods on the 18th of April 2011 when they visited the CPUT Food Technology Department to scout and find talent for in-service training which happens every year.
In March:  Orley Foods’ Liana (HR), Ashton and Yandiswa (Technical) went to present to the students the process of Work Integrated Process (WIL) at Orley Foods.
Students were told what was expected of them as well as what they can expect from their in-service training in the company. Interviews were conducted on site and selections were done for the 2011-2012 period.

ZDS Chocolate Technology International Conference

The conference included all facets of chocolate and allowed the opportunity to network with other professionals and experts in this field by sharing ideas and tasting chocolate creations from all over the world.

This is how Victoria shared her experience about this World Class Festival:

“It has been such a fantastic experience, from learning to make truffles at the Chocolate Festival held in the beautiful small town of Tubingen, to rubbing arms with the chocolate experts at The International Chocolate Technology Conference in Cologne.
I have been incredibly lucky with my travels and all the snow, and have had no delays while travelling through this winter wonderland. The actual lectures were very science intense and research based, with the main focus and hot topics including: cocoa butter crystallization, new research into the rheology of chocolate and the sustainability of cocoa. The big retail trends included that of single origin chocolate, the use of super fruits in chocolate, and combining savory with chocolate, with M&M pretzels winning USA product of the year! The amount of research being conducted in this field is quite mind blowing, and for me to be exposed to all of this together with the latest trends has been an incredible honor”

Tasting at Value Baking!

On the 9th and16th April Value Baking hosted a tasting. Amongst their creations, were our own Cater crème mixed with our versatile Caramel Spread. This spread can be used for Piping and filling amongst other applications and can also be a spread on a slice of toast as well.  The Crème and Caramel is mixed at a 1:1 ratio. Mix the caramel in the tub to make it soft, light and fluffy. Then put it into the bowl with the crème and beat it. Slowly first, then gradually going faster, 4 minutes should do it. (Recipe kindly supplied by Julio Bloemetjie, one of our Cape Town Sales Executives).
